PositioningControl Troubleshooting

These are frequently asked questions for the PositioningControl service.

Is P Protocol the same as Extended P Protocol?

Yes, there is only one P Protocol.

What is the idle timeout for PositioningControl?

Like all other Pelco API web services, PositioningControl will timeout after 15 seconds.

Spectra IV IP

Once timed out, Spectra IV IP cameras will no longer respond to new SetVelocity requests. For SetVelocity to become operational once more, users need to send the Spectra IV IP a new SetVelocity request with zero values.

When users put video on an external Monitor view, does the operator then control PTZ and rewind normally?

Yes.

Why is PositioningControl's GetPosition action returning an inaccurate result?

The value that GetPosition returns is only based on what is stored locally on the device based on the last call to the SetPosition action. Therefore, it may not always return accurate data if it was moved using another action, service, or other means.

If the SetPosition action has never been called (the device has just been activated), then GetPosition will just return 0 for x and 0 for y.

How do users pan or move an IP camera right and left?

Refer to the section about panning (or moving) an IP camera right and left in PositioningControl General Usage for details.

How do users tilt an IP camera up and down?

Refer to the section about tilting an IP camera up and down in PositioningControl General Usage for details.

How do users move an IP camera in diagonal directions?

Refer to the section about moving an IP camera in diagonal directions in PositioningControl General Usage for details.

How can users define presets?

Presets are part of ScriptControl functionality. For more information, refer to 'How do you define a preset?' in Frequently Asked Questions in the Sales and Support area of pelco.com..

Configuration

My Pelco IP camera is not responding to any PTZ requests. What is the issue?

Users must configure their Pelco IP camera correctly to enable positioning control. Using the CameraConfiguration service, users must set the following:

Camera type -- Dome and Pan/Tilt are valid values for movable IP cameras.

  • 1 for Pan/Tilt
  • 2 for Dome

Control mode -- For movable IP cameras, DProtocol and PProtocol are valid values.

  • 3 for DProtocol (more common among IP Cameras)
  • 4 for PProtocol

For details on how to set an IP Camera's configuration, refer to the section about modifying a camera's configuration on CameraConfiguration General Usage

If you have already configured your Pelco IP camera correctly, refer to "What is the idle timeout for PositioningControl?" above.

Performance

Can zoom and pan-tilt commands be executed simultaneously?

Yes.

A working example is in progress.

A PTZ camera's RTP streams seems to have an increased video payload whenever the camera moves by PTZ control.

Refer to Increased Video Payload in PositioningControl Issues for details.

The camera's response time to PTZ commands is slow (over 30 ms). What are possible issues?

After each PTZ movement command, users must issue a PTZ command to end movement. For details, review PositioningControl Issues, specifically Stopping Movement.

Is there a maximum limit of the number of commands per second that Pelco devices support?

For details on this issue, refer to the Maximum Number of Commands Per Second section in PositioningControl Issues.

Which port should pan and tilt requests use for performance?
